Modular curtain wall system for MEH Facade Museum of Human Evolution
Below we will describe the most important parts of the MEH and CENIEH façade. The museum and the research center are part of the Human Evolution Complex, work of the architect, sculptor and painter Juan Navarro BaldewegThe central axis of the project is nature, which starts from the banks of the Arlanzón River and through a concatenation of green spaces culminates in the interior of the building. The museum, as the main piece of this architectural complex, was conceived as a large space open to light and nature. This premise required an envelope that would allow the passage of these elements into the interior in a nuanced way.
The envelope consists of a double skin glass which allows to control, through the chamber that is generated between both, the air circulation and therefore its thermal behavior, also incorporating glazing of up to 44mm high performance, combining transparent glass and silver glass. This differentiation in the treatment of the glass forms a facade order that is reflected in the system modulation and is enhanced on the south façade of the museum with the use of large profiles that mark a gigantic order.
The great challenge that was raised in the envelope of this building is to respond coherently to the deflection angle with respect to the orthogonality of the structural axes, and which is present throughout the whole. The system used was a Modular curtain wall, which allowed the manufacturing of each of the modules to be controlled in the workshop using special profiles, developed especially to incorporate this deviation and optimize the construction logic of the entire façade. The development of specific elements facilitated, especially in this case, the natural integration of the practicable panels, non-orthogonal, which allow control of the thermal buffer between the two skins of the façade.
