Today we want to echo an initiative that seeks to protect the historic depots that the Metro Madrid company has in Cuatro Caminos, in the Chamberí District.
Madrid Citizenship and Heritage (MCyP) and the Save Four Roads Platform (S4C) They are working together to ensure that the garages are declared a Site of Cultural Interest, thereby halting the project to build a new residential building, which has already been financed by almost 500 cooperative members.
They have the support of institutions such as the International Committee for the Conservation and Protection of Industrial Heritage (TICCIH), which recently signed a letter of support for this initiative, arguing the historical value of these facilities, one of the 8 oldest in the world and the oldest in Spain.
"The subway was created by a multidisciplinary team made up of engineers Otamendi, Mendoza, González Echarte and Moreno, together with architect Antonio Palacios who was in charge of the architectural design and corporate image of the company. modernity and avant-garde The buildings in this complex, inspired by the now-disappeared New York Subway Depot, make them a unique industrial icon and an exceptional testament to their era.”
The technological prowess that this industrial building displayed at the time of its construction is admirable. The use of curtain walls built with very thin steel ribs sought a lightness and transparency that was exceptional for its time. Without a doubt, they are an example that deserves to be preserved since they are part of our culture, of what we can achieve with ambition and the creative use of technology. For all these reasons, at Riventi we want to join the initiative to declare it as a BIC.
All information regarding the building can be consulted in the complete Report prepared by Madrid Citizenship and Heritage.
Anyone who wants to join the initiative can do so through the petition that the platform has enabled at change.org
